According to data from the Central Statistical Office, at the end of 2016 there were about 2.5 million compatriots abroad. Since our country’s accession to the European Union in 2004, the United Kingdom has remained the most popular emigration destination, where over 780,000 Polish citizens currently live and work. After opening the borders, there are also a lot of us from our nearest Western neighbors – Germany has chosen another 700,000 people to live and earn. Poles also willingly go to the Netherlands, Ireland and Italy (currently about 100,000 in each of these countries) and Norway, France and Belgium (between 60 and 80,000 citizens in each of these countries). Polish can also be heard in Sweden, Spain and Portugal. What’s more, last year’s research showed that another nearly 3 million Poles are thinking of going abroad.
